Social Committee

Social activity is a top priority at RGE. It's a great way to get out and meet new friends, keep young, learn new things, Lois and Bruce Kean
and keep fit emotionally and physically. With almost 30 activities listed on the "Activities" page not including dances and special events, there is something for everyone. We feel that all of this interest and activity make our community especially worthwhile and quite desirable. Oh! Did we mention that all of the above activities are managed and presented by dedicated volunteers from our community?

Because of the complexity and variety of events that happen on a monthly basis at our clubhouse, the Social Committee, headed by Social Director (presently a husband and wife team), is one of the key standing committees and because of the way it's organized, one of the most interesting.

Here's how it functions:

The element that makes this task so unique and surprising is that we have a new committee each month usually amounting to three or four couples. This allows the Social Director to meet new people in our community and get new ideas. The group for the month will have a meeting and choose among them who will be the responsible party to make sure all of the activities for the month are
correlated and will be finalized in a timely manor.

A theme is selected for each month and the clubhouse will be decorated accordingly. Everyone looks forward to this fresh look and new ideas for each month.

Each monthly committee runs the "coffee/social hour" on the first Saturday of the month. This is the time for residents to purchase tickets for the monthly events and to visit with friends while enjoying a donut with a hot cup of coffee.

Another planned event is a dinner scheduled sometime during the month. This may be catered or it could be "pot luck". It's the choice of the group for the month. These once-a-month dinners are very well attended.

The ladies of the community also plan a luncheon each month that may be catered or sometimes is a "pitch in". Once a season the ladies will arrange for a style show with a local merchant. Sometimes the group goes out for lunch but we find that the luncheons at the clubhouse are better attended.

Our monthly dance is very important because they always draw crowds of 175 to 200 of our Riviera residents. Eight to ten sit at each table, just enough to meet new friends and greet old ones. Most folks dance, but some just watch and enjoy the music. Everyone brings their own snacks and drinks to keep our tickets at a very low price. At our "coffee hour" you can purchase a ticket for $5 or $6 and enjoy an evening of fun, dancing and great entertainment.

The Social Director's principal responsibility is to ensure that all social events at the clubhouse have a good committee each month and to assist the committee if there are questions. Other duties are to maintain a calendar of all events, including private parties. Anyone planning a party at the clubhouse or the annex should first check with the Social Director to make sure the date and space are available. As often as possible, the Social Director attends the monthly board meeting and provides a status report if necessary. The report to the board include all information about funding for major events or any large expenditures. The Director also orders supplies for the kitchen, and storage room - cups, plates, etc.
