a. With all the unintelligible passwords it's a good
idea to include your name at the end of an email message.
This is particularly true if the message is being sent
to a person who receives a lot of mail.

b. Do not spread rumors or virus alerts. If you feel
the message is important then take the time to verify
its content. Otherwise, ignore it, even if it comes
from your best friend.

c. If you are sending a message to many people send
the original to yourself and blind copies to everyone
else. Never send email to a public list. Doing so
invites still further invasions of privacy.

d. Under no circumstances should you send or forward
a file unless the person who is to receive the file
has requested it.

e. Do not send email that in written in capital letters
or in color.

f. If you compose email in an emotionally charged
state, do not send it out right away. Wait a while.
How long? The more emotionally charged you were
when you wrote it, the longer you should wait. A
day or so might be appropriate. And then read it
once again before sending it out. Most often
you'll discover it's really not worth mailing.

g. Requiring a receipt from friends and
acquaintances might be resented.

How to avoid sending email addresses to many people.

Do yourself a favor as well as one for all the folks to whom you send email. A person's email address is private and is not publicly circulated unless the person circulates it him or herself. If you are sending an email to more than one person, do not send the others carbon copies (CC) unless there is a good reason for others to know whom you are addressing. You can avoid this by simply sending yourself the email and include their addresses following "BCC" (blind carbon copy). The person will receive the message without all the other email addresses. Using this BCC method prevents a person's email address from being gobbled up by spy-ware which is almost always found on PCs without good security. If the computer is not protected a copy of the email address is sent ( perhaps sold ) to a wholesale spammer without the owner of the computer ever knowing about it.

How to avoid visiting a dangerous website.

When you receive an email in which the sender - no matter who it is - suggests that you visit a site and provides its url, http://www.inthisway.com, first check to see if it is really going to "www.inthisway.com". You can do this simply by using the Edit menu, "Select All" and copy the email. Open a blank word processing document and paste the email in. If http://www.inthisway.com is bracketed within two "carrots" like this it's legitimate. But beware if something like this appears http://www.inthisway.com

For a screen which is exactly 12 5/8" wide and 9 1/2" high, a resolution of 800 x 600 is fine. If you increase the resolution to 832 x 624, folders and words are a little smaller.

How to change your screen resolution

1. Open Display in Control Panel. 2. On the Settings tab, under Screen resolution, drag the slider, and then click Apply. 3. When prompted to apply the settings, click OK. Your screen will turn black for a moment. 4. Once your screen resolution changes, you have 15 seconds to confirm the change. It becomes confused by out-of-the-ordinary events. Out of the ordinary events may include but are not limited to: the introduction of a new program or application contradicting commands not enough memory or storage space too many applications open over heated element a virus spyware loose wires Additionally, because a computer's system and each application consists of many files, any of the above events as well as actions by an internet connection could have temporarily or permanently damaged a file which is an integral part of the overall system of the software. When the dumb computer is faced with any of the above, it can behave in many ways - making noise (rare), black screen on monitor, distortion on monitor, appearance of windows with unintelligible messages, inability to start up when you turn on the computer. The most common reaction , however, is to freeze. Then neither the mouse nor the keyboard functions. It's like a human being during a mental breakdown. It needs to be freed, rested, and then reconnected to life. When this happens you should do the following in this order: First Procedure: 1. What were you attempting to do? If you have no restart button, press the start button. 3 If the computer will not start, press the start button and hold it down until it does start. 4, If the computer still does not start, disconnect the computer from the power source. - "Pull the plug." Second Procedure: 1. If you hadn't disconnected the power, disconnect it now. 2. After noting which cable goes to what socket, disconnect each and every cable connected to other power sources, to the computer and to all your peripheral hardware including printer, hubs, sound systems, external, drives, etc. 3. Now, before reconnecting the power, reconnect all cables. Then connect the power cable to the peripherals and finally to the computer. 4. Keep your fingers crossed and start up the computer. How to protect the Home Computer - NYTimes

The following copy appeared in a box on page 16 of the New York Times , Sunday, January 7, 2007. It was part of a continuation of the article which appeared on Page 1. Tips for Protecting the Home Computer JOHN MARKOFF Botnet programs and other malicious software largely take aim at PCs running the Microsoft Windows operating system, because Windows' ubiquity makes it fertile ground for network-based attacks. Using a non-Windows-based PC may be one defense against these programs, known as malware; also, anti-malware programs and anti-virus utilities for the PC are available from several vendors. Microsoft entered the computer-security business last year and now offers a free malware-removal tool for download from its Web site. The company says the program removes about two million pieces of malware each month, of which 200,000, or about 10 percent, are botnet infections. Like Windows, Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser is also a large, convenient target for code-writing vandals. Alternative browsers, like Firefox and Opera, may insulate users. Microsoft's most recent browser release, Internet Explorer 7, is said to offer significantly improved defenses. Adding software to your browser like Noscript, a plug-in utility, can limit the ability of remote programs to run potentially damaging programs on your PC. Security experts also offer these tips: Don't share your computer (on which you pay your bills) with your children (who download games). Use a firewall program that warns you about outgoing connections that botnets make to communicate with control software. Don't use the same password on more than one financial site. Don't let your browser store your password for such sites. Don't buy anything offered by a spammer. Don't click if someone offers you something too good to be true. It is.
